Our Girls Code Jam is our NEW and FREE Jam bringing togther girls of all ages, and their adults, and programmers to learn and grow with code.

The goal is creative skill-building and inquiry for tomorrow’s technology workforce.

What does a Jam look like?

It's a semi-unstructured, individualized-learning, creativity-inspiring experience for youth. There is no strict agenda. There will be multiple stations.

When students arrive, we'll describe each of the stations, and then you and your child will be free to choose where you want to spend your time. This gives your child the opportunity to work on the projects they find personally interesting. Some kids will float around, spending time at many stations and working on different things, while others will choose to spend the majority of their time working on one project. We welcome this sort of self-directed exploration. Each station will have volunteer instructors and assistants to guide you on how to use the tool, and then to support your student as they think creatively and start coding.

How can I get involved? Do I need to know how to code?

There are numerous ways to volunteer at the Jam! You can work at an activity station, help with registration and t-shirts, direct traffic and much more. When you register you’ll be able to select the volunteer positions that are of interest to you. And no, you don’t need to have coding experience; we have something for everyone!

What does the day look like for a volunteer?

Volunteers will arrive at 10:00am to help with setup. At 11:30am, we will host a networking lunch for all the volunteers. This is a great time to get to know the other volunteers and YCJ staff. At 12:30pm, we will finish lunch and everyone will head to their volunteer positions. The doors will open at 12:45pm, and the event runs from 1:00-4:00pm. Clean up is usually pretty quick, so you should be done by 4:30pm. It’s a fun day, and we will keep you well fueled with food and coffee :)

Do I need to bring anything?

Yes, please bring a photo ID.

What do I wear?

All volunteers will receive a t-shirt upon check-in. You can wear it right away, or, if you are with a team/company, you can wear company gear. (You get the Jam shirt regardless.) Your attire should be comfortable and appropriate. We will be indoors, but it can get warm inside when the rooms are full. You might be standing for a long time so comfortable shoes are a must.

Is there free parking?

Yes, there is free parking on site, although it is limited. There is street parking as well.

If I am under 18, can I volunteer?

Yes, volunteers as young as 14 can participate. If you are under 18, your parent/guardian will need to be on the event premises the entire time.

We can't wait to see you there!

If you have any questions, please email Amanda Jauregui at amanda@youthcodejam.org.
